2K Games has appointed Ben Brinkman from Respawn Entertainment to oversee the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Management Change Comes After Lukewarm Reception
Brinkman assumes the role of studio head at 31st Union following the departure of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' lackluster unveiling last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified team members about this organizational change through an official communication, which highlighted that playtesting had shown the necessity for a distinct vision.
The president noted that the developers is now refining the project with a renewed vision, aiming to address gamer demands.
A Pattern of Strategic Recruitment
This announcement follows a comparable action taken by 2K Games in August, when they hired Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise development group.
Below is the full message from Ismailer's memo:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just wrapped up your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Previously I shared you all a update, I stated the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most driven and innovative designers we have had the chance to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to persist.”
With your dedication and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS playtest was revealing. It validated the appeal of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the necessity for a clearer vision.
The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the criticism to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a renewed vision - one that’s ready to deliver on its potential to our audience.
Our confidence in this project increases every day. To further the outstanding development you’ve made, It is a pleasure to introduce Ben Brinkman as the latest Studio Head of 31st Union. After a period of talks, he comes aboard us on next week.
His leadership and experience in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having dedicated the past decade and a half creating and managing some of the most well-known series in the industry, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in greeting Ben in the coming days. We are all excited to keep seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the months to follow.
The President
