At least 13 individuals lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an accelerated rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was requested pending a comprehensive independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national initiatives.
