Revitalized Daniil Medvedev Claims Maiden Championship in Nearly 30 Months

Nineteen of the Russian's twenty-one championships have been earned on hard courts

A revitalized Daniil Medvedev secured his first championship for over two years with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the competition final.

Medvedev, a former number one, has had a torrid season, achieving just one match at the Grand Slams and undergoing a meltdown at the New York tournament.

The player's inconsistency on the tennis tour - and struggles with his serving in especial - resulted in him dropping out of the top ten and ultimately parting ways with long-term trainer his previous coach.

Now working with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, he has gradually progressed in the past month - peaking in a tightly fought competitive triumph over opponent Moutet.

This marks Medvedev's maiden trophy following the Rome competition and maiden on a hardcourt after March of that year.

Success also means the Russian has achieved 21 titles at 21 different competitions.

"For the first time I'm at a competition with my two daughters at once, so to secure a championship is especially meaningful," said tennis professional Daniil Medvedev.

"This victory is in honour of my child Victoria, because the first title I achieved when my child Alisa was born was for her."

Medvedev, the past champion, had been defeated in his last six championship matches, including in Halle earlier this year.

Medvedev's retrieving strategy and frequent emotional displays on the tennis court had caused commentators to question if his skill to play at the highest level was over.

But the player has made changes in recent weeks, making an effort to approach the net and play positively, backed up by an enhanced service.

He fought back from a deficit in the initial set against the difficult Frenchman, winning four of the final five exchanges to go ahead.

The pair exchanged service breaks in the second set before the Frenchman, striving for his maiden tour title, seized the initiative to push for a third set.

The opponent saved four early-game opportunities in a tight final set before the Russian broke to fifteen to close out the victory.

Suitably, Medvedev clinched the win with a shot at the net, with Moutet unable to handle a shot after over two and a half hours.
