Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas represent an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The true challenge facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. During this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, what is Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a significant handicap.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major factors explain this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A US startup can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market highlight the need for sweeping reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
