Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing these medications need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified regain.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
People who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like something flipping and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
